It’s that time of year where the big gear comes out of hiding and the gloves go on for battle. Cairns heavy tackle marlin season has arrived! (or should we say ‘Port Douglas’ heavy tackle season?!). Anglers come from all over the world to fish in the densest congregation of giant black marlin over a 3 month period – The Great Barrier Reef.

What is ‘heavy tackle’? Strong rods, big reels and heavy line pretty much sums it up.
Anglers chase their dream of hooking the elusive ‘grander’ marlin – a fish weighing 1000lb+ in size. These magnificent creatures migrate to our reefs to spawn and create another generation of billfish. Catch and release is the preferred method and satellite tagging is also conducted during the annual Lizard Island Billfish Classic sponsored by the Peter Tackle Foundation.

We offer live-aboard charters which are typically 4-7 days in length at a time. Operating out of Port Douglas, Cooktown and Lizard Island depending on the time of season and where the fishing is hot – you can expect to have the time of your life! Our charters tend to book up to a year in advanced so if this is something you’re interested in doing, contact us today about last minute availabilities for the 2018 season or prime dates for the 2019 season!
